Great British Insulation Scheme

The Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS) is a government energy-efficiency scheme that is administered by Ofgem. It is designed to deliver improvements to the least energy-efficient homes in Great Britain to help tackle fuel poverty and reduce carbon emissions.

The Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS) is a government scheme to help people insulate their homes, make them more energy efficient and save money on their energy bills.

The government announced the scheme at the end of March 2023. The £1 billion scheme will help around 300,000 households across the country with the cost of installing new home insulation. The scheme is scheduled to run until March 2026.

Great British Insulation Scheme eligibility

You may be able to get free or cheaper insulation to reduce your home’s energy bills.

You might get support if your home:

  • has an energy performance certificate (EPC) of D to G
  • is in Council Tax bands A-D in England or A-E in Scotland or Wales

You can be a homeowner, landlord or tenant (either renting privately or from a housing association). If you’re a tenant, speak to your landlord before you apply. You’ll need their permission before any insulation can be installed.

You may be able to get support to install:

  • cavity wall insulation
  • solid wall insulation (internal or external)
  • loft insulation
  • flat or pitched roof insulation
  • underfloor insulation
  • solid floor insulation
  • park home insulation
  • room-in-roof insulation
